PRIDE & PREJUDICE

Pride and Prejudice is a novel, published in 1813, written by British novelist Jane Aus-ten. She began writing the original manuscript of Pride and Prejudice between 1796 and 1797, under the title First impressions (in particular because she wanted t
o em-phasize that they deliver so many prejudices. But a publisher did not find it good enough, so she reviewed it in 1811.
Pride and Prejudice was first printed in January 1813, two years after Sense and Sensi-bility, her first book, by the Mil
itary Library in Whitehall.

e its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript and another unfinished novel, The Watsons. Her six full-length novels have rarely been out of print, although they were published anony-mously and brought her mod
erate success and little fame during her lifetime.
A significant transition in her posthumous reputation occurred in 1833, when her novels were republished in Richard Bentley''s Standard Novels series, illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering, and sold
as a set. They gradually gained wider acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew''s publication of A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life
to an eager audience.
