PRIX DE ROME 2021

Prix de Rome 2021. Beeldende Kunst / Visual Arts verschijnt bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam met nieuw werk van de kunstenaars die zijn geselecteerd voor de shortlist van de Prix de Rome 2021. Centraal staat het werk
van Mercedes Azpilicueta, Alexis Blake, Silvia Martes en Coralie Vogelaar. Volgens de internationale jury reflecteren de vier finalisten op actuele thema''s, bieden kritische herinterpretaties van historische gebeurtenissen, verbinden onderbelichte g
eschiedenissen aan het heden, of richten de blik juist op de verre toekomst. Ieder representeert op eigen wijze de huidige tijdsgeest.

De kunstenaars worden geintroduceerd door auteurs Dagmar Dirkx en Esmee Postma. In een inleidend essay sch
etst Stedelijk Museum directeur Rein Wolfs zijn persoonlijke beschouwing op het werk van de genomineerden en verbindt dit aan recente ontwikkelingen binnen de kunstgeschiedenis.

De Prix de Rome is de oudste prijs in Nederland voor beeldend
kunstenaars onder de 40 jaar. Het doel van de prijs is getalenteerde beeldend kunstenaars te traceren en hen te stimuleren zich verder te ontwikkelen en hun zichtbaarheid te vergroten. De prijs wordt georganiseerd en gefinancierd door het Mondriaan F
onds.

Prix de Rome 2021. Beeldende Kunst / Visual Arts accompanies the eponymous exhibition at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam with new work by the artists who have been shortlisted for the Prix de Rome 2021. It centres around the work of Mercede
s Azpilicueta, Alexis Blake, Silvia Martes and Coralie Vogelaar. According to the international jury, the four finalists are able to reflect on topical themes, present critical re-interpretations of historical events, and either connect underexposed
narratives to the present day, or direct our gaze towards the distant future. Each of them represents the current zeitgeist in their own individual way.
The artists are introduced by the authors Dagmar Dirkx and Esmee Postma. In an introductory e
ssay, Stedelijk Museum director Rein Wolfs outlines his personal views on the work of the nominees and draws parallels to contemporary developments in art history.
The Prix de Rome is the oldest award in the Netherlands for visual artists below
the age of 40. The purpose of the award is to identify talented visual artists and to encourage them to develop and increase their visibility. The award is organized and funded by the Mondriaan Fund.
